Hypnotherapy - What Is It? by John Bohn

In recent years hypnosis has become mainstream. It is neither mystical nor magical and is quite simple to accomplish in a somewhat effortless way. Most people report it to be an enjoyable experience. I believe all people are capable of being in this altered state of mind, which often happens quite naturally. Have you not had a daydream-like drifting feeling just prior to sleep or when you wake up?

In the hypnotic state you're in control, not the therapist; no one can make you do anything against your will. However, if you are motivated for change and have that expectation and want it to happen - then it will be so. Naturally I welcome the client who is ready to make a commitment and take responsibility rather than someone who is just in complaining mode or in an inquiry stage, not yet ready for therapy.

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis - the therapist is a facilitator. Basically hypnosis is a way of accessing your subconscious in a relaxed state and becoming receptive to positive ego-strengthening messages for motivation, self-esteem or future direction (affirmations).

Regression is only used if absolutely necessary to find the original sensitizing event. By accessing the subconscious mind usually prevents the talk therapy going in circles.

Many people hold back from this very useful therapy, and are not often referred, by the medical profession. There are so many applications and I often wonder why it is not a first choice for many afflictions, emotional and personal problems rather than a last resort.

There are at least 120 reasons documented where hypnosis could be effective, but many people do not know this.

My main areas of specialization are in the emotional, fears, phobias and addictive behaviour fields and of course, self-esteem is boosted with all my therapy.

I like to help where there is chronic and terminal pain, as well as deep trance for surgical and dental procedures and childbirth where chemical anaesthesia can be reduced or eliminated. What is so difficult usually for people to comprehend is that the imagination is much stronger than will power.

It is rather unfortunate that for more than a century hypnosis has been popularized on the stage, magazines and films and made somewhat dramatic, and yet downgraded as a therapy. It's possibly the most useful and beneficial tool of all in the right hands.

There have been many misconceptions, but one thing that is factual is that it's one profession where the older the therapist gets, the better he or she seems to get - everything adds up to experience.

I practice hypnotherapy in Daylesford,  Ballarat and surrounding areas in Victoria, Australia and welcome your queries.

When visiting a Hypnotherapist.
What happens!

It's very common for people to request lots of information about what I do.

Funnily enough many people resolve it in the negative and decide against a visit and I wonder why, especially when they have been told lots of information as to what to expect. As most of us can relate very strongly to the largely negative feelings of FEAR, GUILT AND DOUBT WE MUST DO SOMETHING FOR CORRECTION. It is generally the fear of "what will happen to me" that prevents going ahead with this very useful way of helping. Sometimes the partner or other close associate is against this style of treatment and this can be very restrictive. It causes the person to seek help "the hard way".

Basically people are only interested in results and in the shortest possible number of visits very often an unrealistic expectation. My aim of therapy is to get people out of therapy.

There has to be a background history taken as well as educating the conscious mind about hypnosis otherwise a client may think they have not been hypnotized. The misconceptions have come about through stage, screen and magazines. I think there would be more incorrect ideas about it than most other fields.

Usually in the first visit there is a pre-induction interview, then hypnotic session followed by brief post hypnotic interview. An assessment is made for follow up.

Almost invariably a client will reassess their life, viewing some things differently and make adjustments in their life for the better. When we remove the anxiety surrounding your life the problem is really no longer there.

For instance a client may present with a request for weight loss. In this case I spend lots of time reinforcing self worth /self esteem and the ability to accept praise often lacking. The excess weight can become a lesser issue to be dealt with later if necessary. Maybe my Tape or CD "Weight Loss" as a follow up. When people are unsure yet have a feeling that it could help I encourage them to ask questions.

Important Decision

THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISION IS WHETHER VISITS TO HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WILL HELP OR HINDER YOUR OWN HEALING SYSTEM.

THIS MAY INVOLVE LIFE ENHANCEMENT FEATURES AND A FUTURE VISION FOR YOU TO GO FORWARD WITH CONFIDENCE.

You will want to know whether any complimentary treatments exist that might be of benefit.

When you get sick or feel that things in your life need attending to, you must decide what course of action to take in order to recover your health and wellbeing.

If you do not accept this responsibility, others will decide for you and will not necessarily make the best choices.

I think that hypnotherapy is an appropriate sounding board, especially useful for relationship difficulties and personal issues.

Did you know that hypnotherapy can be utilized for almost any problem treatable by psychotherapy, and for many physical ailments as well? Asthmatics, for example, can benefit by learning relaxation and visualization techniques that can be used safely along with their conventional medical treatment.

We all know that the subconscious mind is very powerful  and by choosing to allow your subconscious to strengthen your resolve, you will become the master of your own destiny.

My system of hypnotherapy allows those who have chosen to take charge of their lives the genuine opportunity for success.

The stigma of going for therapy seems to be fading as better and faster healing methods contribute to this. Also the testimony and evidence of the benefits of this therapy abound.

People are more open to the idea of seeking help these days. Needing help is not a sign of weakness; It is seen more as personal adjustment and relearning.

CD's are available.
