Hypnosis Interest Group (HIG)

HYPNOSIS INTEREST GROUP 2013

Welcome all new people and previous supporters – Guide Lines

Our aims and ideals are as follows -

We have discussions related to the practice of Hypnotherapy, case studies, and interesting talks, videos or demos from our own attendees. Frequently we are on the lookout for others to present a subject. Maybe you have a special expertise that could be shared with us.

The overall aim is to keep the group independent, non-executive, without committees, and cost for day to cover expenses is $5 including tea and coffee and for lunch, at your cost, please bring your own or we go to a nearby café, preferably in a group booking. No one presenting a segment is paid. So far it has been most successful to the point of reaching capacity of the volunteer houses, hence Carlton Library. Prior agreement for Video/DVD player or other equipment you may bring if presenting say a power point.

No Power Point facility at Carlton Library – must organize one’s own data projector if presenting via this medium. All videos or DVD must be very clear and audible – so many Hypnosis ones are so badly produced and recorded – often soft inaudible voices with subjects. We are only a discussion group – not political agitators but do welcome any ideas towards the promotion, credibility of the profession of Hypnotherapy that could be passed on to the several professional organizations.

What we are!

We aim to be democratic and decisions by majority rule e.g. next meeting program, venue etc.

We aim to remain uncomplicated, non-profit without cumbersome structure. I have been the coordinator/organizer since the beginning in 2000. We are all at different levels of learning and experience – we respect each person’s input and encourage active participation.

If we feel we have comments or questions please hold until speaker has completed. Often their train of thought can be disturbed, especially if one is inexperienced. It is OK to challenge, but please be reasonable. The other person’s testimony may well be valid, however different from what you do. People come to Hypnotherapy for least number of visits only for results and we may look well outside the square to “find the best mouse trap!” (Solution)

If you feel as though that person’s approach is harmful or unethical and this is very rare – then speak to the person privately in the breaks or myself, not to whole group. Perhaps it’s easily sorted out. These are my thoughts only and open for comment.

Remember, more than in most professions there are so many ways to literally “skin the cat”, with so many associated and interconnecting modalities such as TFT, NLP, Gestalt and lots of others that it is my belief very few people practice full time pure Hypnotherapy - I’ve always endeavored to be honest and explain experiences in practice that I have encountered that usually one hasn’t learned from the teaching schools. It has been estimated that there are over 500 modalities in the healing field, but many overlap and are “me too” in their nature. I practice only Hypnotherapy (no other modalities) in Daylesford/Ballarat

You may have friends to whom you suggest this group. WOM is the best advertising and so necessary to remain in practice.

We encourage case studies to present that may be difficult, stubborn ones to get our “teeth” into and we shun hype, amazing successes or self-praise “one-upmanship.” Complaints that are generally regarded as “incurable” by Orthodox Medicine come into this category.

We do not condone such things as “Promises and Guarantees” by therapists – a classic example of recent years is the “Stop Smoking in one hour with life time guarantee”

Anyone who has been in Hypnotherapy for as long as I would surely know the mixed bag of interconnecting problems our clients present (without exception) and it does take a lot of experience, even years to be really able to help people. If they stop in one hour invariably they take on another unwanted trait such as comfort eating.

We have survived all these years without professional jealousies or conflict and will remain so. We encourage all qualified to belong to a professional group.

I hope my remarks are not too direct but believe them to be positive.

Enjoy the group meetings – most people have come back many times over the 12 years.

There is a chance to network with others with business cards, leaflets are OK or relevant book exchange, or book give away if more value to another.

At times one will describe his/her new project, method, and website or workshop coming up. No real rules, just a guide line or two for smooth running. It has run smoothly and well in my opinion. It is not best policy to boast about how successful or your client stats.
